Waymo's Driverless Taxis Coming Soon London Streets in 2026.
The US-based company Waymo has revealed that its driverless taxis will be operational for use on London's streets beginning next year.
London Becomes First European City for Autonomous Taxi Service.
The UK capital will emerge as the inaugural European city to host an self-driving taxi service, similar to those already familiar in San Francisco and four other American urban centers utilizing Waymo's advanced technology.
Preliminary Operations to Begin with Safety Drivers.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are now heading to London and will commence driving on the city's roads in the next few weeks with experienced operators behind the wheel.
The company – initially created as a derivative from Google's autonomous vehicle initiative and part of the Alphabet family – indicated it would increase operations and work closely with the UK transport authorities and London's transport agency to obtain the essential permissions to offer fully autonomous rides by 2026.
Growing Involvement in Self-Driving Transport In London.
Other organizations, such as Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own plans to test driverless vehicles in the capital next year.
This is in response to the government officials confirming it would accelerate guidelines allowing public trials to proceed before laws allowing self-driving vehicles passes in full.
“I am thrilled that Waymo aims to launch their offerings to London next year, under our proposed piloting scheme,” said the government minister, Heidi Alexander.
“Supporting the autonomous vehicle sector will improve accessible travel alternatives in addition to generating jobs, capital, and prospects to the UK. Innovative funding like this will assist in achieving our mission to be world leaders in advanced innovation and drive economic growth.”
Comprehensive Rollout Projected After Automated Vehicles Act Is Enforced.
A broader deployment of self-driving vehicles is projected in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act comes completely into force in late 2027.
Waymo's Current Ties in the UK and Internationally.
Waymo already has connections to Britain after opening its pioneering European technical center in Oxford in 2019.
The company is also launching offerings in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover eco-friendly cars, marking its only other present operation outside the United States.
“We've demonstrated how to responsibly scale totally self-driving taxi services, and we are eager to extend the benefits of our technology to the United Kingdom,” said Tekedra Mawakana, adding that the innovation was “making roads safer and mobility more inclusive”.
Demonstrated Experience in the United States.
Waymo began its autonomous cabs in 2020 and presently claims it has served in excess of 10 million riders in the US.
In spite of some alarming events, Waymo indicated that data showed that cars operated by humans were involved in crashes that hurt people on foot at a much higher rate than its self-driving vehicles.
