Napoli's Coach Sees UEFA Match like Pupils vs Masters Against Pep Guardiola's Side

Napoli's head coach remarked that his team's opening Champions League match against the English champions will be a showdown of "students against the masters," adding that he sought advice from Kevin De Bruyne about his former club.

The Italian Club’s Return to the Champions League

Although having been Italian league title winners, the manager regards his team as evolving as they gear up for their first fixture in the new 36-club format of the competition.

"We are definitely playing against where history is undeniable," the Napoli boss commented. "They are a top club with a world-class manager. We arrive with great humility after an amazing year last year."

The Midfielder’s Advice and Role

Kevin De Bruyne joined Napoli on a free transfer during the off-season following ten years at Manchester City. Conte disclosed that he has asked him for insights about his old team.

"I’ve spoken to Kevin, I asked him a couple of things concerning Manchester City," the manager said. "He was a part of this club for a decade and worked under a brilliant tactician like Guardiola."

The Scot’s Influence and Resurgence

The midfielder joined Napoli from United in 2024 and was instrumental in leading the team claim the Serie A title previously.

"I knew him when he played with United," the Italian stated. "I saw great talent in him and wondered why he was not performing at his best in England."

"The chance came to sign McTominay, frankly at first I couldn’t imagine it was possible," he added. "It happened and currently he is enjoying it with us."

Højlund’s Fresh Start

The Danish forward also joined on a temporary deal from Manchester United this summer and found the net on his first appearance against Fiorentina.

"In my view we are talking about a talent with great potential," remarked the head coach. "At only twenty-two, so he has a whole career ahead of him. Now is up to me to help him improve and grow into a world-class forward."
