England Explore for World Cup Training Facilities Amid Worries of Losing First-Choice Site to the Dutch.
England's football governing body has dispatched operational staff to the US this week to evaluate potential training camps for the forthcoming tournament, amid increasing worries that their preferred location could be allocated by the Netherlands.
Draw Complications Change Preparations
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had previously approved an FA strategy for England to set up camp in Kansas following a pre-tournament training camp in Fort Lauderdale. However, after the recent tournament draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who have their group stage matches in Kansas, will be awarded first choice on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre operated by US Soccer.
The world governing body allocates training bases based on geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is a dispute, with the draw potentially placing the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's south-central region.
Exploring Alternative Options
Given England's group stage matches set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now reportedly looking at alternative locations on the east coast. The association started its search for training camps at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott touring potential sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this early planning, there was always an acceptance that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their logistical arrangements.
Later Round Travel Plans
The Three Lions have the eighth most arduous group stage draw in terms of travel. Topping Group L would put England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, then a potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Significant Departure: The FA may decide to travel from match to match for the knockout stages if England qualify, a significant shift from its standard protocol of having a fixed tournament base.
- Tournament Organizers Encouragement: FIFA is believed to be actively encouraging such a flexible strategy for the vast 2026 tournament.
After the base camp is confirmed, the FA will focus on arranging two warm-up matches in Florida at the start of June.
