The UK authorities has added 11 more countries to its public alert register about the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

The updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to multiple notable events including the deadly loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should know the symptoms of methanol toxicity.

"While having drinks in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or free shots," the minister warned.

"In case something seems unusual, such as a hangover that's way worse than usual or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."

The full list of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
